San Francisco Hike No. 1
Expired

Dear Hiker,

The San Francisco City Hike to Forest Hill, Mt. Davidson, and Twin Peaks is scheduled for Saturday, April 24. This hike will consist of three segments totaling approximately six miles, five hours, and a 1000 ft. elevation gain. Plan to meet us at the West Portal Recreation Center on Lenox Way, between Taraval and Ulloa, at 10 AM for a prompt 10:15 AM departure. Street parking is available on Lenox Way and the surrounding area. We will stop for lunch at the top of Mt. Davidson, the highest point in San Francisco. Plan to wear layered clothing, and bring a lunch and plenty of liquids. We will hike rain or shine, so be prepared. Bring $2 for your Muni fare at the end of our hike, and $7 for your carpool driver towards gas and a portion of the Golden Gate Bridge toll for your carpool driver if you are planning to carpool.

The West Portal Branch of the San Francisco Public Library, located at the corner of Lenox Way and Ulloa, opens at 10 AM and has public restrooms. For those of you who arrive early and want to enjoy coffee/breakfast in San Francisco, Noah’s Bagels, Peet’s Coffee, and the Squat & Gobble (offering omelets, crepes, Eggs Benedict, etc.) are all located nearby on West Portal between Vincente and Ulloa. Our city hike will feature lots of steps and none of our usual flags. Our first segment through Forest Hill will last approximately 90 minutes and end at the library. After a 15 minute break at the library, we will begin the second segment that will take us to the top of Mt. Davidson and our lunch spot. Part of the route is a dirt trail that can be muddy. The views at the top are outstanding. After lunch, we will pass near West Portal and then ascend to Twin Peaks. We will descend on the other side to the Castro, board an electric train, and return to West Portal at approximately 3:45 PM.

We strongly encourage you to carpool. The optimal parking spots are along the curbside of the school on Lenox Way. If the bulk of us carpool, we may all manage to park there. Anyone wishing to carpool can meet at the Park and Ride in Santa Rosa, located between the Fairgrounds and the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, under the freeway. Meet at 7:45 AM for a prompt 8 AM departure. Dave Chalk will be there to organize the carpool. Mike Noel is organizing a Petaluma carpool. Meet him at the Petaluma Lakeville & Hwy 101 Park & Ride at 8:15 AM for a prompt 8:30 AM departure.

It will be helpful if we have a projection of how many people are planning to participate in the April 24 S.F. hike. We are not requiring reservations. We are merely asking you to fill out a form if you plan to do the hike. Click the SignUp tab to do this.

Our sincere thanks to Jim Dennis who has done the research to organize this hike and Mike Noel, Lynn Pelletier, Scott Lewis, Sheryl King,  Dennis O'Dea, Sandy Larsen, and Tim Bacon for joining the pre-hike checkouts.

This hike is NOT sponsored by Sonoma County Regional Parks, California State Parks, or Valley of the Moon Natural History Association.
