Much of our hikes come from the book:

• Stairway Walks in San Francisco (by Adah Bakalinsky, with Marian Gregoire)
  The 7th edition has 29 walks, each with commentary about the sights and step-by-step directions. I sometimes go to San Francisco for the day and do a couple of the walks at a leisurely pace with a lunch break in between them. There are times when I felT like I was on a treasure hunt. The book states exactly where to take a stairway. However the entrance to it blends so seamlessly into the surroundings that, like a chameleon, I miss it and have to double back.

Besides the above sources there are two other aids I use for walks in San Francisco:

• San Francisco in Detail (map)
  I find this map the easiest to read and follow directions. The last time I looked, Barnes and Noble on 4th street in Santa Rosa had a couple of them The other book stores may also carry them. The list price is $4.95.
  
  
• Official San Francisco Street & Transit Map
  In San Francisco, I think it is best to ditch the automobile. This map will help you do it. It displays a system wide map of the bus and light rail (Muni/Metro) routes. In addition it lists how frequently each bus runs at various times during the day. This can be purchased at the visitor center at Fifth and Powell. The cost is about $3.50.
